Half Day Computer Camp

Using a custom mod called “Computercraft”, students will learn how to program robots called “Turtles” inside the world of Minecraft. In this class, students will be introduced to LUA, a simple scripting language used to develop games such as Angry Birds, where they will learn how to programming if-then-else statements, for-while loops, and implement their own functions. Kids will utilize problem-solving skills by learning how to program their robots to complete various tasks and objectives such as programming their turtles to automatically build, mine, and craft items and structures.

Students are introduced to the world of electronics and circuitry using Minecraft redstone, a virtual equivalent to real world wiring without the limits of physical resources. This class will allow students to identify the purpose of circuits as well as various components, including inputs and outputs. Theories such as powering a circuit and conductivity will be taught through a variety of exercises and build projects which relate to real world circuits. Guided exercises begin simple with making a switch for a light and progress into creating a fully automated circuit for an elevator. This leads to students creating their own mechanisms based on what they have learned.

This class is tailored to younger children who want to learn the basics of visual programming. Students create commands for their robots to follow by using an application with a drag-and-drop interface that is visually simple to use, but capable of complex instructions. Students learn the importance of teamwork by working together with a partner in order to accomplish the build assignment for the day.

Graphic Novels and sequential Art has become a mainstay in literary material. From Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes to Art Spiegelman’s Maus, comics are an interactive written and visual art form. In this class students will learn the foundations of Sequential Art and Comics. Students will use lesson learned in school to build a plot, theme, and characters to draft a script. Using both traditional media of pencil and paper, and later digital media, students will begin to draw each panel of their story while learning principles of design and drawing.
